Gain a Better Understanding
Often ranked the hardest A-Level subject, chemistry requires good maths skills and the ability to understand and apply abstract, complex ideas. Topics such as intermolecular forces, Hess’s Law, organic chemistry, and multistep mole calculations are renowned for causing students difficulties, leading to anxiety, poor grades, and demotivation. As a specialist A-Level chemistry tutor that has worked with hundreds of students, I have developed methods for teaching difficult concepts that make them easier to understand and apply in exam questions.
Learn How to Revise More Effectively
Spanning two years, and with a heavy emphasis on application rather than recall of knowledge, success at A-Level chemistry needs an effective study system. Students often find that revision strategies that worked for GCSE level are not as effective for A-Level. Different A-Level chemistry topics also require different approaches to studying. Some topics are mostly skills-based and once learned, the skills must be repeatedly and regularly practised to master them and ensure they stay mastered. Other topics require you to learn and memorise lots of factual content. I can show you the best ways to revise each topic, using tried-and-tested methods such as active recall and spaced repetition and teach you the study skills used by the most successful students so that your exam preparation is effective and efficient.
“Hi Carl, We are so pleased to tell you that ******** has achieved A* in his A-Level chemistry.
He has also got A* in Biology and Maths as well. Thank you so much again for all your help with his A-Level Chemistry.”

Improve Exam Technique
As an examiner that has written an exam preparation workbook, I have a wealth of experience to help you improve your exam technique. I can provide you with in-depth feedback to help you improve your exam performance, understand mark schemes better, and avoid common mistakes. No doubt you already understand the importance of past papers, but do you understand how to use them effectively? Too many students prioritise quantity over quality when it comes to past papers and work through paper after paper without a clear improvement strategy. As well as exposing you to the style and difficulty of the questions you will face in the exam, past paper questions also enhance and extend your knowledge because they are not based around straightforward ‘textbook’ chemistry. I can show you how to use past papers more effectively to pinpoint your weaknesses and draw up an action plan to address them.
Extend Understanding
It’s true to say you can never know too much when it comes to A-Level chemistry exams. The hardest ‘stretch and challenge’ exam questions (those designed to discriminate between A* and A grades) require you to apply familiar concepts and skills in unfamiliar situations. To answer difficult, synoptic questions you must make connections between topics that may not have seemed connected when you first learned them. The hardest questions might even appear to have gone off the syllabus because they feature unfamiliar chemistry. If you’re aiming for an A*, we can work together to extend your knowledge by covering more advanced concepts that go beyond the syllabus requirements.
Improve Analytical Skills
As an A-Level chemistry student, having good problem-solving and critical thinking skills are essential to answer the hardest questions. These analytical skills help you analyse complex data, break down difficult concepts into manageable steps, and draw logical conclusions from given information. By honing your analytical skills, you can identify patterns in chemical reactions, tackle multistep calculations, and interpret experimental data more easily. This also helps you draw connections between different topics and provides insight on how best to approach a novel problem.
Through many years’ experience as an A-Level chemistry tutor, I have developed a large database of the most difficult exam questions from the different exam boards. By studying these questions together in lessons to understand what makes them challenging, we can work together to improve your problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills so that you will be ready to solve the most difficult chemistry problems with confidence.
Get a Head Start to University Chemistry:
Each year, some of my A-Level chemistry students go on to study chemistry or Natural Sciences, many of them at leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial. Many of these students choose to continue tuition with me after their summer A-Level exams, so that they can study some of the undergraduate content before starting university. I help to give these students a head start by covering some of the essential foundational concepts required by first-year undergraduate courses and by setting them reading exercises and practise problems related to more advanced topics. This helps them excel and gain a deeper understanding of the material, which is also important when applying to highly competitive universities.
The feedback from my A-Level students that pursued a chemistry career has been overwhelmingly positive and many have even progressed onto postgraduate studies. It has been incredibly rewarding to help these students achieve their goals and see them progress.
Career and University Guidance
Drawing on over ten years’ professional chemical industry experience, I can provide career and university guidance to help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your future, providing advice on courses, universities, and job prospects. By understanding the requirements of top universities, I can equip you with the skills needed to excel in the admissions process and offer insight into the qualifications needed for different roles and industries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is A-Level Chemistry hard?
Yes, it’s regarded as one of the hardest A Levels and anybody that says otherwise is just bragging or took A-Level chemistry so long ago that they’ve forgotten what it was like! That shouldn’t put you off choosing it though – it’s a valuable A Level for university admission, even if you’re not planning to pursue a science-related career.
Do I need A-Level maths to study A-Level chemistry?
It’s not essential, but I strongly recommend it. Around 20% of marks in A-Level chemistry exams assess maths skills. A-Level maths improves your numeracy, but also your logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities – valuable skills for tackling chemistry problems.
How do I get an A* in A-Level chemistry?
I have written about this here.
How should I revise for A-Level chemistry?
A blog about this is in the pipeline – watch this space!
Why do you need chemistry A-Level for medicine?
You get a different answer to this question depending on whom you ask. One perspective is that life has a molecular basis, so understanding interactions between, for example, drug molecules and biological targets (enzymes and receptors) is important because it’s the basis for so many prescription medicines. A lot of admissions tutors however will tell you it’s because chemistry is hard, and it develops a lot of useful skills that are important in medicine, such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to draw logical conclusions from data presented in lots of different formats.
How experienced are you and what qualifications do you hold?
I have been teaching and tutoring A-Level chemistry for over ten years, and have a Master’s degree, PhD, and PGCE in chemistry.
Are there any additional resources available to help me with my studies?
I provide all my students with notes, topic question packs, and additional past papers that cannot be found online anymore. I share these with you through Google Drive.
What support is available prior to exams, such as mock tests or practice papers?
I can provide mock papers, mark them, and give detailed written feedback on your answers to help you improve.
Which exam boards do you tutor?
I cover AQA, CIE, Edexcel (including IAL), and OCR.
