About Dr Carl
A Passion For Chemistry, A Commitment to Student Success
My Mission
I believe that any student can excel in chemistry.
Success isn’t determined by innate talent, but by cultivating the right approach, attitude, and a true understanding of the core concepts. My mission is to demystify chemistry, moving beyond simple memorisation to build the confidence, skills, and growth mindset that allow my students to achieve their full academic potential.

My Journey
The Spark: Where it Began
My fascination with chemistry began with the discovery of an old chemistry set in my grandparents’ garage and the question, “what happens when we mix…?” From understanding the molecules in medicines to the materials in our modern world, I was drawn to chemistry as the central science that explains everything around us. That curiosity drove me through years of advanced study, and today I bring that same passion and depth of knowledge to ensure every student I work with gains not just results, but lasting confidence in chemistry.
The Academic Path: From MChem to PhD
I pursued this passion at the University of Manchester, earning a Master’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry, followed by a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the prestigious Durham University. My academic journey taught me not just the subject matter, but the importance of rigorous, evidence-based thinking and clear communication – skills I now work to instil in all my students.
After completing my academic work, I formalised my passion for teaching by gaining my PGCE from Newcastle University.
From Industry to Inspiration: Why I Teach
Before becoming a full-time educator, I founded and ran LyraChem Limited, a process R&D company that began life as a spinout company from Durham and Newcastle universities. As CEO, I worked with global pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies, optimising complex chemical processes.
This experience at the cutting edge of industrial chemistry was invaluable, but it also revealed my true passion: making complex science accessible and inspiring the next generation. I realised that my greatest satisfaction came from seeing the “aha!” moment when a difficult concept finally clicks for a student.
I now dedicate 100% of my time to teaching, bringing my real-world experience into every lesson to show students not just the theory, but the exciting reality of where chemistry can take them.

Beyond the Lab Coat
When I’m not teaching or thinking about chemistry, you can usually find me at the piano, experimenting with new recipes, hiking with friends, or planning my next travel adventure.
