Your Journey to Success: The Engagement Process

Frequently Asked Questions

My approach is tailored specifically to the qualification level (GCSE, A-Level, or IB) and the individual student’s needs. Because the structure and content focus differ significantly between these qualifications, I have outlined my methodology in detail on each respective service page:

I exclusively offer one-to-one sessions.

I’ve structured my service this way because I firmly believe the core value of private tuition lies in providing undivided attention. A one-to-one setting allows me to fully personalize the pace and content of every lesson to a single student’s specific learning style and challenges, ensuring we can work through difficulties without compromise.

Yes, I have significant experience preparing students for these demanding challenges and specialize in stretching high-achievers beyond the constraints of the standard A-Level and IB syllabus.

Preparation for competitions like the Olympiad or Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (C3L6) requires a different approach to standard tuition. It focuses on developing advanced problem-solving skills and applying core chemical principles to unfamiliar contexts—skills that are essential for university interviews and study.

My background as a PhD chemist uniquely positions me to cover this advanced material effectively. In fact, I often integrate C3L6 and Olympiad-style problems into my regular sessions for students aiming for A* grades to ensure they master the subject at a deeper level. For multi-disciplinary exams like the ESAT, I provide expert preparation for the chemistry component.

I don’t offer free trial lessons. Instead, I offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation. This allows us to discuss your child’s specific needs and academic goals, and gives you an opportunity to understand my teaching methodology and ensure we are a good fit before any financial commitment.

Following this consultation, you have the option to book a single, paid trial lesson. This allows your child to experience a full, standard session before you commit to a regular package. I find this two-step process (consultation followed by an optional paid trial) is the most effective way to establish a successful long-term partnership.

It is impossible to provide a fixed number of lessons upfront, as every student’s situation is unique. The total duration required depends on several key factors:

  • Starting Point: The student’s current understanding and confidence in the subject.
  • Learning Goals: The gap between their current grade and their target grade.
  • Learning Pace: How quickly the student assimilates new concepts and techniques.
  • Independent Work: The consistency and effort applied to homework and revision between sessions.

Following the initial diagnostic assessment and the first few lessons, I can provide a clearer estimate of the required support and collaboratively create a learning plan. Some students require ongoing support throughout the academic year, while others may only need a focused block of lessons to address specific weak areas before exams.

Yes, marking for assignments set as part of our structured lesson plan is included. This ensures I can effectively track progress and adapt future lessons based on performance in bespoke homework tasks.

For extensive marking requests that fall outside of our regular lesson framework (e.g., marking large volumes of school-set assignments or additional work sourced by the student), this time is charged at the standard hourly rate. This allows me to dedicate sufficient time to provide the detailed feedback required.

Yes. I provide a dedicated mock exam marking service for students seeking detailed feedback on full past papers, especially during revision periods.

This service goes beyond a simple mark scheme check. You will receive comprehensive written feedback that identifies specific knowledge gaps, highlights common errors, and provides actionable advice on improving exam technique to maximise marks. This service is charged based on the time required for in-depth analysis and feedback.

Yes, I offer a reduced rate for clients who commit to a full block or term of lessons upfront. The package price offers better value than the single-lesson rate. Please contact me for details.

Invoices are sent via email following session confirmation or at the start of the month for block bookings. Payment can be made easily via either of the following methods:

  • Direct Bank Transfer (Recommended Method): This is our preferred method for all UK-based clients (via BACS) and international clients (via Wise or international wire transfer). There are no additional processing fees associated with this method. Full banking details are provided on every invoice.
  • PayPal/Credit Card: For your convenience, we also accept payments via PayPal or credit/debit card. Please note that payments made through this service incur a pass-through processing fee of 4%, which will be added to your invoice total.

To ensure a smooth learning experience, students require a setup that allows for interactive participation. We divide this into essential requirements and a highly recommended upgrade for full interactivity.

Essential Requirements:

  • Stable Internet Connection: A reliable broadband connection capable of sustaining a stable video call on platforms like Zoom.
  • Computer/Laptop: A desktop computer or laptop with a large enough screen to view shared materials clearly.
  • Webcam and Microphone: Standard built-in or external webcam and microphone for clear audio-visual communication.

Highly Recommended for Optimal Interaction:

  • Graphics Tablet (Digital Pen): To fully participate in interactive whiteboard exercises, we strongly recommend a graphics tablet and digital pen (e.g., Wacom or Huion models). This allows the student to write and draw chemical structures directly on the shared screen, mimicking a real pen-and-paper experience. While not mandatory, this significantly enhances the effectiveness of online chemistry tuition.
I require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson. This allows time to rearrange schedules and offer the slot to another student. To reschedule, please contact me directly via email, WhatsApp, or phone. Lessons cancelled or rescheduled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be charged in full. For complete details, please refer to the Terms & Conditions.
No, I only offer weekly lessons. I don’t offer fortnightly or less frequent lessons because from experience, it doesn’t allow the regularity and continuity required for effective tuition. It is also too difficult to accommodate infrequent or irregular lessons within a full teaching schedule where 95% of students are on weekly lessons. If you require fortnightly lessons and are able to find another student to alternate with, I may consider this.
Yes, I hold an Enhanced DBS Certificate and subscribe to the official DBS Update Service.

What this means for you: Unlike a traditional paper certificate which only guarantees clearance on the date it was issued, the Update Service provides a live, real-time status check. This ensures my clearance is continuously monitored and validated by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

How to verify my status: For safeguarding purposes, I can provide any parent/guardian/school with the necessary details (my DBS certificate number and date of birth) to perform an instant online check via the official GOV.UK portal
